Light, Mirrors, and Pennies

In Eli's light unit there was an experiment using two mirrors and a penny. This was one of those experiments they played with for a while after the time we spent on it in class. :)

Making a Spectrum (Eli the Rainbow Maker)

Eliman has been drooling over his prism we bought him. I told him to just wait. I knew this experiment was coming up. :)


We have been learning how one can seperate the white light into the colors of the spectrum. We created our own prism once before with a glass or water, mirror,and a flashlight. It was SUPER NEAT to have a real prism. Eli counts it as one of his precious belongings now. I love it.


We do not have enough of a light source through our windows. We used a flashlight in the bathroom so we could catch the spectrum with the camera. We had a great time lining it all up just right.





Learning how we see color is fascinating to me. What a wonderful creator we have to think this all out for us.

Refraction (Eli the Light Bender)

Elijah did an experiment to show how light will go in a different direction as it enters a new material.


The pencil appears normal in the empty glass of air.





He added water and found this neat light effect.

Light Unit ~ Elijah

We started a unit on light. :) The title of it is called, "Let There Be Light". I love that, too cute!


You will need:





* A light
* Glass of milk
* Glass
* Book


I had Eli shine his pen light from the top of the drinking glass through to the table. I asked him what happened. He said the object was transparent because it allowed the light to pass right through it.





We did the same thing with the book. He remembered that something that doesn't allow light to pass through is called opaque.





Next, I had him pour his soymilk into the glass he had used before. He held the pen light under the bottom of the glass of milk. He decided the milk diffused and scattered the light.





He also thought the light through the milk was pretty. It was. :) After we were done he put 8 carbs into his insulin pump and enjoyed the milk. ;) YUM!

Astronomy ~ To Absorb or to Reflect?

One day we did this experiment to see how light reacts. Eli had read that dark things on earth absorb light and that light things reflect it.


First, he bounced a light from black paper to his hand.





Next, he did the same thing with white paper.





Again, this is one of those SIMPLE but NEAT and IMPRESSIVE experiments that just make the lesson come to life. :) Enjoy!
