Elijah learned that during the day the atmosphere scatters the light from the sun. This makes it too bright to see the stars. If he were say on the moon, where there is no atmosphere, he could see them all day.
First he poked holes into a white piece of paper and held it to the light.
Next, he did the same with black paper. He was so excited by the result!
