Plaque Attacks

In health time Eli is studying teeth. We have revisited how plaque and the sugars we eat combine to form an acid. This acid is a full on "acid attack" for 20 minutes. It finally hit him why dental care is so important.

He did a very simple experiment to see how an acid would react with an "enamel".

He placed an uncooked egg in a glass and covered it with vinegar. He let this sit over night.

When we looked in the morning we found a foam on the top of the glass.

They wondered why it was foamy. The only thing we can agree on is that it is the shell that was dissolved in the vinegar. Because when the egg was removed the shell was gone. The egg was rubbery!

They played with it a bit and then they cut it open. Well, Elijah tried to cut it, he actually ended up puncturing it with the knife.

The egg reminded Remy of what a snake egg looks like once the baby snakes hatch. It was so gross.

You better believe Eli brushes his teeth like crazy now. HA HA! He informed me that he does chemistry all day in his mouth. LOL You know, the sugar and plaque making an acid. He makes me laugh.

I really don't like to study the teeth. My teeth feel dirty the whole week or so we do it each year. I can't brush them enough. Matthew says he feels the same way.
